The story behind The World Is A Ghetto by War

Full episode transcript · 380 words

Hello and welcome to VinylCast.

A gleaming Rolls-Royce sits paralyzed on a crumbling street with a flat tire, a stark image of luxury defeated by its surroundings. This illustration, created by Howard Miller for the 1972 cover of War's fifth studio album, perfectly encapsulated the bittersweet reality of the era. The world was changing, the optimism of the sixties was cooling, and the multi-ethnic collective known as War was ready to provide the soundtrack. That record was The World Is a Ghetto.

Following the departure of singer Eric Burdon in 1971, the seven members of the band found themselves at a creative crossroads in Los Angeles. They retreated to Crystal Industries studio for twenty-nine days, where they captured lightning through collective improvisation. Their process was radical: they would jam for twenty-five minutes at a time, tossing around grooves and licks, arguing and refining their ideas until they coalesced into structured songs.

The title track itself found its spark in the mind of percussionist Papa Dee Allen, who had been developing a story about a Black superhero named Ghetto Man. But the concept fully crystallized when the band traveled through the wealthy enclaves of Malibu and Hollywood. There, they witnessed sewer lines backing up and luxury vehicles stalled on the roadside. They realized that wealth was no shield against misery and that struggle was a universal human condition.

Musically, the album is a tour de force of soul, jazz, and Latin fusion. From the gold-certified rhythm of The Cisco Kid to the sprawling thirteen-minute instrumental City, Country, City, the band displayed a total mastery of their craft. Lee Oskar’s harmonica wails with a vocal quality, while Lonnie Jordan’s organ and B.B. Dickerson’s bass lock into an unbreakable pocket.

In a stunning upset against rock giants like Pink Floyd and Elton John, this record attained the number one spot on Billboard and was crowned the best-selling album of 1973. The music was so potent that it eventually found its way into the DNA of hip hop, sampled by legends like the Geto Boys and ASAP Mob. It remains a poignant reminder that happiness isn't found in a zip code, but in the love and security we share with one another.
