The story behind Dreaming of You by Selena

Full episode transcript · 336 words

Hello and welcome to VinylCast.

On the morning of March 31, 1995, producer Guy Roche was sitting in a studio, meticulously tweaking a sustained vocal note—the word "Toniiight"—when a news bulletin flashed across the television screen. He broke down in tears. The voice on the track belonged to twenty-three-year-old Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, and she had just been murdered. This is the story of Dreaming of You, an album that stands as a fragment of a masterpiece.

In the mid-nineties, Selena was already the undisputed Queen of Tejano, capable of packing the Houston Astrodome with over sixty thousand fans. Yet, her eyes were fixed on a massive crossover into the American English market. But the recording sessions became a race against a clock no one knew was ticking. On March 5, less than a month before her death, Selena entered the booth in Corpus Christi to record the title track. She was battling severe bronchitis, her throat raw and painful. Her father urged her to simply attempt a run-through. Miraculously, she delivered the final, pristine vocal in a single take.

The album’s ambition was staggering. It wasn't just pop; she was pushing boundaries, collaborating with Talking Heads legend David Byrne on the experimental track "God's Child." But when Yolanda Saldívar pulled the trigger, only four new English songs were fully completed.

Completing the album became an agonizing process for those left behind. Her husband, guitarist Chris Pérez, had to record his parts posthumously. The grief was so visceral that he forced the engineers to mute Selena’s lead vocals in his headphones; he physically could not bear the sound of her ghost filling the room while he played.

Released on July 18, 1995, the result was historic. Moving 331,000 copies in its first week alone, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, the first predominantly Spanish-language album to ever hold that spot. It proved that the barriers she died fighting to break were finally gone.
