The story behind II by Boyz II Men

Full episode transcript · 299 words

Hello and welcome to VinylCast. Today, we step into the friction of nineteen-ninety-four. The mission? To dissect the creation of II, the album that transformed Boyz II Men from Philly street-corner harmonizers into global untouchables.

The stakes were suffocating. The group was coming off the colossal high of Cooleyhighharmony and the record-shattering "End of the Road." But behind the polished vocals, a civil war was brewing at Motown. The group fought to keep their sound raw and homegrown, demanding that the production duo Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson—known as Tim & Bob—helm the majority of the project.

Motown President Jheryl Busby, however, slammed the brakes. Unwilling to gamble the label's biggest cash cow on unproven names, he forced a compromise. While Tim & Bob secured a few cuts, Busby drafted the Avengers of R&B: the architects of smooth soul Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the hitmaker Babyface, and the innovative Dallas Austin.

The sessions were grueling. Over twenty songs were cut. The casualties of this corporate tug-of-war included tracks like "Now That We're Done" and "Can I Touch You"—songs that were exiled from II only to resurface in nineteen-ninety-six on 112’s debut album for Bad Boy Records.

But the friction produced diamonds. When II dropped on August 30, 1994, it didn't just sell; it reigned. The sound was a muscular evolution of their "hip hop doo-wop." In a display of chart dominance unseen since The Beatles and Elvis, the group replaced themselves at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, with "On Bended Knee" dethroning "I'll Make Love to You."

Certified twelve-times Platinum and becoming the inaugural winner of the Grammy for Best R&B Album, II proved that even amidst executive interference, true harmony cannot be silenced.
