The story behind Back in Black by AC/DC

Full episode transcript · 456 words

Hello and welcome to VinylCast.

A crab scuttled across the wooden floorboards of a concrete cell in Nassau, interrupting a take while tropical storms outside wreaked havoc on the studio's electricity. It was April 1980 at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, and the air was thick not just with humidity, but with the heavy weight of grief. This was the chaotic, high-stakes birth of AC/DC's Back in Black.

Just two months earlier, on February 19, 1980, the band's charismatic frontman Bon Scott had died from alcohol poisoning in London at the age of 33. The group had just broken through internationally with Highway to Hell, but suddenly faced the end of the road. The year was 1980, and the musical landscape was shifting; neon lights and synthesizers were rising, threatening to make hard rock obsolete. Guitarists Malcolm and Angus Young seriously considered disbanding, yet it was Scott's father, Chick, who urged them to carry on.

They found their new voice in Brian Johnson, a Geordie singer and former windshield fitter who impressed them by belting out Tina Turner's Nutbush City Limits during his audition. Malcolm Young made him comfortable immediately by offering him a bottle of brown ale, signaling he was just one of the guys.

The recording sessions were a trial by fire. Customs officials had held up their equipment, forcing them to wait, and the weather was relentless. The opening lyrics of Hells Bells, "I'm rolling thunder, pouring rain," were actually a literal report of the tropical storm raging outside the studio. Producer Robert John Mutt Lange demanded absolute perfection, sometimes driving Johnson crazy by dictating exactly where to breathe, yet he captured the raw power of the band playing live in the room to secure that massive ambient sound.

The dedication to sonic detail was immense. For the ominous opening of Hells Bells, the band tried recording real church bells in Loughborough, but the sound of pigeons flying away ruined every take. They ultimately had a two-thousand-pound bronze bell custom cast by a foundry to achieve that specific death knell. The title track, built on a riff Malcolm wrote during the Highway to Hell tour, featured lyrics Johnson wrote to celebrate Scott's resilience rather than mourn him.

Even the packaging was a fight. The band demanded an all-black cover as a sign of mourning. Atlantic Records hated the idea, fearing commercial suicide, but finally agreed to a grey outline for the logo. Released on July 25, 1980, the gamble paid off. Back in Black became the best-selling hard rock album ever, moving fifty million copies worldwide. It remains a monument to resilience, proving that rock and roll truly never dies.
