The story behind All Eyez on Me by 2Pac

Full episode transcript · 421 words

Hello and welcome to VinylCast. Today, we step inside the vocal booth with a legend who was running out of time. We are dissecting the chaotic, fueled-by-paranoia creation of 2Pac’s magnum opus: All Eyez on Me.

It is October 1995. The Hip-Hop "Coastal War" is at its boiling point. Tupac Shakur is sitting in the Clinton Correctional Facility, broke and facing a dead end. But a deal with the devil changes everything. Suge Knight and Jimmy Iovine post a massive 1.4 million dollar bail to set him free. The price tag? A three-album contract with Death Row Records.

Most men would go home to rest. Pac went straight to the lab. He landed in Los Angeles and drove directly to Can-Am Studios. The urgency was terrifying. He attacked his contract with a military mindset, working grueling twelve-hour shifts until engineers passed out at the mixing boards. They called him "One-Take Tupac" for a reason. He stopped writing in notebooks; instead, he scribbled lyrics on the spot—sometimes in the bathroom, sometimes right in the booth—fueled by adrenaline, cigarettes, and Budweiser.

The sessions became legendary instantly. When producer Johnny "J" hesitated to play a specific beat because he thought it was unfinished, his wife had to convince him to press play. Pac heard it, and didn't hesitate. He titled it instantly: All Eyez on Me.

But the album wasn’t a solo mission; it was a gathering of generals. Pac crashed a barbecue at Dr. Dre’s house to hop on a beat originally intended for The Chronic II. He wrote his verse in twenty minutes, Roger Troutman laid down his iconic talkbox vocals, and the anthem California Love was born. The guest list was a power move: he brought in George Clinton for the funk, and despite the East Coast rivalry, he featured Method Man and Redman. Even the mix was complicated—DJ Quik contributed significantly to the sound but had to be credited under his real name, "David Blake," because his contract with Profile Records forbade him from working with Death Row.

Originally titled Euthanasia, the project evolved into the first double-disc album of original material in hip-hop history. Released on February 13, 1996, it moved 566,000 copies in its first week. It was an unapologetic celebration of the Thug Lifestyle, driven by the feeling that the police, the Feds, and the world were watching. Seven months later, Tupac was murdered in Las Vegas, leaving this Diamond-certified masterpiece as his final testament.
